After opening up a 3-1 series lead in the Western Conference finals, the Thunder were poised to knock the Golden State Warriors out for good — they led for almost the entirety of Game 6 before collapsing down the stretch, and they took a 6-point lead into the second half of Game 7. None of that mattered; the finishing blow was always just outside of OKC’s reach. But, man, did the Thunder come close. In fact, according to our quarter-by-quarter analysis of seven-game playoff series since 1984,1The year the NBA playoffs expanded to 16 teams. the Thunder — with a peak win probability of 95.8 percent going into the fourth quarter of Game 6 — came the seventh-closest to a series victory of any modern team that went on to lose. And in the conference finals, only the Portland Trail Blazers’ infamous collapse against the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000 was more unlikely.(The least likely comeback overall? Last year’s Houston Rockets, who went down three games to one against the Clippers before storming back to win three straight games — just like this year’s Warriors team.) 82001BucksHornets2624.7 LOWEST WIN PROBABILITY MOMENT But the Dubs pulled out a dramatic win in Game 6. Their reward: a Game 7 at home that had them as 66 percent favorites to win the series.2It’s worth noting that the betting markets (as measured by Inpredictable’s in-game odds) were never quite as bullish on OKC’s upset chances as the statistical models were. Perhaps the markets were factoring in the invisible aura of Golden State’s championship experience? The rest is history. The defending champions are returning to the Finals, in a rematch against LeBron and the Cavs.Check out our NBA Finals predictions. 102005MavericksRockets1337.5 Greatest best-of-seven NBA playoff series comebacks 91997HeatKnicks2616.6 12015RocketsClippers2630.3% 72016WarriorsThunder3634.2 Here’s how we crunched those numbers: First, we gathered quarter-by-quarter line score data for every NBA playoff game since ’84 and used Wayne Winston’s method of converting point margins to win probabilities to generate a win expectancy number for each team after every quarter. (Given the data we were working with, we couldn’t go deeper to, say, the play-by-play level to find the most dire circumstances within a quarter.) We then plugged those game-level probabilities into the formulae for winning a series, which allowed us to incorporate both the results of games already played and the expected outcomes of future games based on Elo.In terms of series win probability, the Warriors rode a wild roller coaster against the Thunder. At the start, our Elo-based projections gave them a 70 percent chance to win the series. However, by the end of Game 4, that had dropped to just 17.5 percent. A solid Game 5 win helped their odds, but by Game 6 the Thunder had them on the ropes. Entering the fourth quarter of that game, the Warriors stood only a 4.3 percent chance of winning the series. 22000KnicksHeat2621.8 62013HeatSpurs4634.2
Hundreds try to beat November 30 deadline Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 21Dec 2015 – Nearly 75% of the people who registered to vote up to November 30 were not eligible says the Elections Supervisor, Dudley Lewis. A whopping 1,376 men and women who cannot vote in the next General Election turned in documents in the hopes of being able to do so. The Elections Supervisor in an update said there was a drastic increase in number of applications and for this he was glad, but the disappointment came when Lewis realized that, and I quote, “…the number of persons who applied to be added to the register and were not eligible because they were not in possession of a Turks and Caicos Islander or Belonger Status…” was high. Not only are these 743 men and 633 women ineligible, they have not even so much as applied to become Turks and Caicos citizens according to Mr. Lewis. This underscores the confusion Magnetic Media reported upon during the independent voter registration drives; the one launched lastly drawing many apparent Haitians who told us that they thought they could register for the election and citizenship at the same time and be successful. Artist’s impression of the pair of white dwarfs, ZTF J1530+5027. Caltech/IPAC At CNET, we’re big fans of seeing cosmic phenomena locked in dizzying dances of doom. When two huge objects become bound by each other’s gravity, they can be locked into a spiral, circling each other until they merge or die. Astronomers have spotted another such system, this time featuring two “dead stars” — white dwarfs — zipping around each other once every seven minutes. The incredibly fast orbits make this the fastest eclipsing binary system yet recorded. The discovery, dubbed ZTF J1539+5027 and published Wednesday in the journal Nature, was made by researchers using Caltech’s Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), a whole sky survey designed to locate objects that rapidly change in brightness. Searching in the Boötes constellation, researchers spotted this particular pair of dead stars around 8,000 light-years away. The two white dwarfs are so close to each other they are practically spooning, with only 80,000 kilometers (about 49,700 miles) between them, and they’re travelling at hundreds of kilometers per second. Astronomers officially identify this system as an “eclipsing binary” because, from our point of view, one of the stars consistently passes in front of the other. Combined, two stars have a mass similar to that of our sun, but they aren’t twins. One of the white dwarfs is a little bit smaller and a little dimmer.”As the dimmer star passes in front of the brighter one, it blocks most of the light, resulting in the seven-minute blinking pattern we see in the ZTF data,” said Kevin Burdge, lead author on the study and a Ph.D. candidate in physics at Caltech. “We rarely catch these systems as they are still merging like this one.” One of the dwarfs — the more compact one — is incredibly hot. Burdge suggests it may have been heating up as it fed on its dancing partner like some sort of creepy space vampire, draining material from its surface. However, so far, he hasn’t seen any evidence of such an event. On the flip side, the research team also thinks the cooler dwarf (as in colder, not more trendy) shouldn’t be so cold. Burdge calls that another “puzzle.”An artist’s animation of the eclipsing binary. Caltech/IPAC However, there are a few things the team does know. The rare find is important because astronomers know the system emits gravitational waves, faint ripples in spacetime that have only recently been discovered. The dead, Earth-size stars are super dense, and their movement through spacetime as they spin around each other causes invisible waves to emanate outward, travelling through the cosmos. We can’t detect them from this pair yet, Burdge noted, because Earth is too noisy to see the signal generated by the duo. It’s good news that they will keep spinning around each other for another 100,000 years — giving us a chance to detect their gravitational waves at some point in the next 15 years when the European Space Agency’s Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) comes online. Burdge is just trying to get ahead of the game.”The overall intent of the project is to identify as many LISA sources as possible before LISA comes online,” he said. “The earlier you catch these sources, the longer you can monitor them for orbital decay.”That gives researchers time to measure the orbital decay that can determine how far away the binary is.Set to launch in 2034, LISA will hunt for faint gravitational waves from orbit. The trio of satellites stationed in space, Burdge notes, will be complimentary to current gravitational wave detectors on Earth, such as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in the US.”LIGO can see things that LISA can’t, and LISA can see some things that LIGO can’t, and there are a handful of things that might switch from being visible in LISA to LIGO over time,” he said.Part of Burdge’s work will look for similar events to ZTF J1539+5027 and help build a clearer understanding of a star’s life, how white dwarfs come to be and how binary systems work. “This system will stay interesting for the next 30 years, because as time goes on, we should be able to measure tidal effects in the orbital decay, and eventually get a LISA signal from it,” said Burdge. “It has already taught us a lot we didn’t know before, created many new questions, and still has a lot more to teach us.” Sci-Tech Post a comment

The bond offering marks the seventh time in four years that Netflix is raising $1 billion or more through debt. With that latest debt deal, its long-term debt will climb to around $12.5 billion.Moody’s Investor Service assigned a “Ba3” junk-bond rating to the Netflix new debt offering, indicating a non-investment grade “speculative” security. The firm maintained a “stable” outlook on the company, “which reflects our expectation that Netflix’s operating results will improve gradually and the company will de-lever through revenue, EBITDA and margin growth,” Moody’s said in announcing the rating Monday.“Pro forma for this debt issuance, Netflix’s gross leverage will be 7.5x (including Moody’s adjustments) for the last twelve months ended March 31, 2019,” the firm said in the rating assignment. However, it expects Netflix’s gross leverage will fall to below 5.5x by the end of 2019 and below 5.0x by the end of 2020. Gross leverage refers to a company’s gross debt as a ratio of annual EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization).Moody’s projected that the company has the ability to reach cash-flow breakeven by 2023, as it increases total margins to the low- to mid-20% range. “We believe the company’s strategy to procure its own content has positive long-term implications as it builds its owned library assets as compared to pure licensing of content which has supply considerations,” the firm said.Netflix, in its first-quarter 2019 letter to shareholders, said it had “no change to our plan to use the high-yield market to finance our cash needs” — signaling its intention of to raise more debt. Netflix’s cash burn has accelerated: Free cash flow for the first quarter of 2019 was -$460 million (compared with -$287 million in the year-earlier quarter). The company now expects its free cash flow deficit for the full-year 2019 to be “modestly higher” than it previously guided, to -$3.5 billion. It had previously told investors it was expecting negative free cash flow of $3.0 billion for 2019; Netflix says it still expects free cash flow to improve starting in 2020. ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Creator Jenji Kohan and Star Uzo Aduba Bid Farewell What’s Coming to Netflix in September 2019 The company last raised $2 billion in junk bonds in October 2018. So far, it hasn’t paid down any significant amount of the long-term debt it has accrued. It reported $135.5 million in interest expense for the first quarter of 2019 (3% of revenue) up 67% from $81.2 million a year prior (2.2% of revenue). Popular on Variety Related Netflix just went deeper into hock: The company announced the pricing of unsecured bonds in a transaction raising around $2.2 billion, giving it more cash to invest in content, real estate and infrastructure. The streamer had said Tuesday that it planned to raise $2 billion through a new debt offering, bringing its long-term debt to more than $12 billion. On Wednesday, Netflix announced that the total bond offering would be worth about $2.24 billion. That includes €1.2 billion ($1.34 billion) in 3.875% senior notes due 2029 and $900 million of its 5.375% senior notes due 2029. The company said it expects to close the sale on April 29, 2019.Netflix, in its boilerplate text announcing the bond sale said, said it plans to use the cash for general “corporate purposes, which may include content acquisitions, production and development, capital expenditures, investments, working capital and potential acquisitions and strategic transactions.” ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Feed Google the right search keywords in the right order at the right moment and you just might land a job at the tech giant. Max Rosett did.Earlier this week the Yale-educated mathematician, only one month into his new gig as a Googler, told the tale of how he snagged a coveted software engineer position at Google in a revealing blog post on The Hustle. His unexpected journey to the Googleplex started three months ago, split seconds after he Googled “python lambda function list comprehension,” or so he says.Rosett’s brainy search terms yielded a peculiar result. They “split and folded back to reveal a box that said ‘You’re speaking our language. Up for a challenge?’”Related: Google’s Recruiter on How to Build a Superstar TeamAt first the former ApartmentList.com data scientist thought he was the “the victim of an elaborate prank.” Still, he was curious. So he took up the geeky gauntlet and clicked on a little turquoise box that read “I want to play.” Up popped google.com/foobar, a programming quiz that Re/code reports Google has deployed before to source talent.Game on. Google challenged Rosett to solve an elaborate programming puzzle. He had 48 hours to figure it out, but he didn’t need that much time. He unraveled the riddle in just “a couple of hours.” The puzzles kept coming and Rosett kept slaying them, five in two weeks, he says. Not too shabby. Finally, the sixth successfully solved problem was the charm, triggering a request for Rosett to submit his contact info. Then came an email from a Google recruiter. Then an introductory phone call. Then, heavens to Murgatroyd, he did it — he scored an interview.Related: 5 Tactics for Checking for That Elusive Cultural FitSoon Rosett was deep inside Google headquarters, cracking problems like peanuts on a whiteboard. Three months later, he was officially an employee there and apparently still is, despite blabbing his employer’s “Secret Interview Process” online. (We doubt he got Google PR’s approval to do, so we’re interested to see if his tell-all, screenshots included, results in a pink slip.)Re/code, doing its due diligence, reached out to Google to verify Rosett’s story. A spokeswoman responded to the publication’s inquiry with — surprise, surprise — a puzzle. Re/code humored Google and decoded the alphanumeric hex code, which it says reads: “Puzzles are fun. Search on.” Puzzles aren’t just fun to Rosett, and Foo.bar isn’t FUBAR. They’re life-changing career catapults. “Foo.bar is a brilliant recruiting tactic,” he says. “Google used it to identify me before I had even applied anywhere else, and they made me feel important while doing so.” Good on you, Rosett, but, now that the cat’s out of the bag and making the rounds in Google search results, let’s hope the feeling lasts — and the new gig, too.Related: 11 Things You Might Not Know About Google 3 min read Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals
