Boxing titles end on high note

first_imgBOXING BY KILA NAO The five day national boxing championship ended on a high note with most fighters winning individual medals for their associations at Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre in Port Moresby on Friday. It was a tiring week for many boxers that took part in the youth, novice and senior divisions to display their skills and many, it was the first time to expose their talents. The highlight of the tournament was in the 91 kg heavy weight division by the Pacific Games silver medalist Arthur Ray from Manus who defeated NCD’s Napoleon Susub in just 2 seconds of the first round to claim the gold medal. Ray said the event was a test of his strength and temper. The PNGABU secretary Dr Gideon Kendino and the Professional Boxing Union patron Ben Micah lauded Ray for the great skills he had displayed on the ring. In the 81kg light heavy weight category, it was disaster for Hiri’s Barry Walters who had no chance against young Michael Miria of NCD who claimed the gold medal. Miria mauled Walters twice in the second round, forcing the referee to stop the match and award the win to Miria. The 75 kg bout was all but a heated fight between NCD’s Warren Warupi against Joe Magaiva of Kairuku. Warupi came out on top to claim the gold while Magaiva settled for the silver. In the other divisions, Lesley Roger (AROB) – gold and Neville Warupi (NCD) – Silver in the 69 kg, John Ume (NCD) – Gold and Dominic (AROB) in the 63 kg, Jamie Chang (NCD) – Gold and Peter Soko (AROB) – silver medal in the 57 kg. In the 52 kg division champion boxer Mekeo’s Charlie Keama flattened Kopi Mahuta from NCD to claim gold medal. In the senior women’s category, Laizani Soma of NCD beat Elizabeth Oaike from Kairuku to win gold in the 69 kg while Abbeygaile Temu claimed gold medal without an opponent in the 60 kg. For the 57 kg bout, Tresila Joe (NCD) won gold a medal against Philo Maino while Flora Loga (NCD) – gold defeated Veronica (Hiri)-silver and Henrietta Wane (AROB) – Gold medal beat Victoria Aminae (Nomex) – Silver in 48 kg . Pitt falls to Navy 44-28 Military Bowl

first_img(AP Photo/File)ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) _ The players on Pittsburgh’s sideline were jumping and cheering as Quadree Henderson ran 100 yards with the opening kickoff of the Military Bowl.Unfortunately, the Panthers spent the remainder of the day trying _ unsuccessfully _ to stop Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds.Reynolds wrapped up his record-setting college career at Navy in spectacular fashion, running for three touchdowns and throwing for another Monday to lead the Midshipmen to a 44-28 victory.Reynolds ran for 144 yards on 24 carries, completed 9 of 17 passes for 126 yards and had a reception for 47 yards on a trick play.“He’s a super football player,” Panthers first-year coach Pat Narduzzi said. “Make no mistake, there were reasons he was in the (running) for the Heisman Trophy.”Reynolds leaves Navy (11-2) as the Football Bowl Subdivision career leader with 88 touchdowns and 530 points. His 4,559 yards rushing are the most by a quarterback in Division I history.Qadree Ollison rushed for 73 yards and scored two touchdowns for Pitt (8-5). Nate Peterman threw a TD pass but was intercepted three times. The Panthers’ problem was that they couldn’t back up Henderson’s quick score.“You feel like you have the momentum and you start fast, then we just couldn’t get anything going in the first half offensively,” Narduzzi said. “We got things going in the second half, but with a missed field goal and three interceptions, you aren’t going to win many football games.”After Henderson went the distance, Navy took a 21-7 halftime lead and made it 31-7 midway through the third quarter.Pittsburgh scored two touchdowns in 17 seconds to close to 31-21, but could not complete the comeback. It was 38-28 when Reynolds capped a nine-play drive with a 9-yard run with 4:19 remaining. The TD broke a tie with Kenneth Dixon of Louisiana Tech atop the career chart.“To be able to seal the game and get the record at the same time is pretty cool,” the 5-foot-11 senior said. With Reynolds leading the way, the Midshipmen completed their first 11-win season in 135 years of football. That, more than all his personal accomplishments, is what he will remember.“You play the game to win, so the record for wins is the one that means the most to me,” Reynolds said.It was the first game for the Midshipmen since they beat Army and coach Ken Niumatalolo decided to stay at Navy instead of taking the head coaching job at Brigham Young.Niumatalolo was glad he stuck around for Reynolds’ finale.“All of Keenan’s accolades are well deserved,” the coach said. “What an unbelievable career he’s had. Once in a generation, some of the things he’s done. We’re going to miss him.”Playing before a sellout crowd of 36,352 in its home stadium, Navy used its triple-option attack to overwhelm a team that went 6-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and ranked 20th in the nation against the run. The Midshipmen finished with 590 yards in offense, including 417 on the ground _ 114 by fullback Chris Swain. It’s not the way Narduzzi wanted to end his first season at Pitt.“Just have to keep getting one step closer,” he said. “You just have to take one step at a time. Told the seniors, they laid the foundation. We’ve done a lot of great things this year.”Two short TD runs and an 11-yard scoring pass to Tyler Carmona provided Navy with a 21-7 lead.Niumatalolo momentarily abandoned the triple option in the third quarter in favor of a bit of trickery. Reynolds pitched the ball to fullback Shawn White, then went around the right side of the line for a catch-and-run that set up a 26-yard touchdown jaunt by Demond Brown.“I was glad I actually caught the ball,” Reynolds said.It was 31-7 before eterman threw a 4-yard TD pass to Ollison, and a 22-yard fumble return by Jordan Whitehead got Pitt within 10 points. After Navy scored another touchdown, Ollison ran for a 45-yard score to make it 38-28.But this was to be Reynolds’ day. In his final significant drive with the Midshipmen, he converted three third downs and drew the Panthers offside on a fourth-and-3.Soon after that, he walked off the field for the final time.“We can come back for our 20-year reunion,” Reynolds said, “and talk about it and just kick back and laugh.”last_img read more

Players test out first WNBA video game

(AP Photo/Doug Feinberg)GREENBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Sugar Rodgers always wanted to play as herself in an NBA video game, but had to settle for putting “Rodgers” on the back of a male player. Not anymore. For the first time, all 12 WNBA teams, plus All-Star rosters, are available in the new NBA Live 18 game, which will be released Friday. The Associated Press brought an advanced copy to a New York Liberty practice Saturday and let Rodgers and teammate Shavonte Zellous give it a test run. First impressions?“If you’re a little girl, you’ve got to be excited,” Rodgers said. “As a grown woman, I’m excited.”Both players immediately checked their ratings. Rodgers, who earned the AP Sixth Woman of the Year award, was a little disappointed with her 80 overall grade.“I think I’m an 85, almost a 90,” she said. “It is what it is.”Minnesota star Sylvia Fowles has the highest rating among the women, earning a 93. She’s followed by Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi and Elena Delle Donne, who are one point behind.“It feels good to know I’m rated at a high rate,” Fowles said. “The way I performed this year had a lot to do with that. I’m excited to play this game for the first time.”WNBA teams and players can only be used in exhibition mode this year, and users can’t create new female players yet, either. The plan is to add new features for the women in future versions of the game. The Liberty were still impressed by some of the details programmers got right, including their choice of shoe and hairstyle — Stefanie Dolson’s purple hair even made the cut. Officials will recognize the glare they get from Taurasi’s character after a foul call, and Brittney Griner has all of her tattoos. There’s even the WNBA’s “Watch me Work” campaign on the video boards and the WNBA Pride logo on the scorer’s table.“To have our shoes that we wear in the games is awesome,” Zellous said. “Some of the players don’t look exactly how they look off the court, maybe next year they can get my dreads a little longer. It’s the first year, and it’s great.”Rodgers did notice that players in the game tended to use their left hand more than in real life. Maybe that’s because WNBA rookie Kelsey Plum, who is left-handed, was one of the main people used by EA Sports for motion capture. She went to the studio in British Columbia in the summer of 2016 after her junior year of college. The players were grabbed by the quality of the game. Zellous was animated at the controls, whooping and cheering each time her video game character touched the ball. Curious teammates stuck around to check their ratings, and many used their phones to post photos and video on social media.“It’s going to continue to help our league grow,” Zellous said. “When they first announced this, everyone was so amazed. Finally something for the women, not just the men. When you have little kids looking up to us, and you have a video game to help that, it’s amazing.”___Follow Doug on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/dougfeinberg [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv2wCuyAkEs]last_img read more

‘Staying patient and knowing how to suffer was key’ – Marcelo

first_img Angels Fabregues 03/04/2016 On Ramos’ red card he said: “He didn’t hit [his opponents’] ear, but it’s problem, he always does everything to help the team.” Upd. at 00:02 For Marcelo, the key to the win was “staying patient and knowing how to suffer and in the end, with the players we have up front, we have resolved the game.”  The Madrid defender said his team “knew we had to suffer. It’s difficult to play against one of the best teams in the world and even more so at Camp Nou, but we have shown that we are competitive and we’ve shown our fans that we will keep working.”  Marcelo recognised that Real Madrid’s win over Barcelona was not easy, but said that his side “knew how to be patient and in the end we have won the game.”  The Brazilian said that with Zidane they do try to keep the ball more. “We knew it would be difficult against Barca, but we kept it well at times. From Keylor [Navas] through the whole team, everyone did well.”  CESTlast_img read more

U.S. Citizen Living in Saudi Arabia Lacked Standing to Challenge FATCA (Alsheikh v. Lew, DC Calif.)

first_imgCCH Tax Day ReportA U.S. citizen’s claim that the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) violated the Constitution was dismissed for lack of standing. The individual argued that FATCA violated the Fourth, Tenth and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution because requiring foreign institutions to provide financial information to the government constitutes an unlawful search and violates due process and equal protection rights. However, the individual’s complaint failed to allege standing because there was no allegation that any financial institution had been required to provide any of his financial information to the U.S. government. In fact, the individual failed to provide any factual information regarding his bank accounts, including that his accounts were subject to reporting because the account balances exceeded $50,000. Additionally, the complaint did not sufficiently allege that harm was imminent, as opposed to conjectural or hypothetical. While the individual’s country of residence (Saudi Arabia) had reached an agreement in substance to an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) to enforce FATCA, the IGA had not yet been implemented. Therefore, his allegations of harm were hypothetical future harms that did not provide Article III standing.A.S. Alsheikh v. J. Could this new compound give you a suntan—without the sun?

first_img By Ryan CrossJun. 13, 2017 , 12:15 PM Could this new compound give you a suntan—without the sun? A newly discovered compound may one day allow beachgoers to get a natural tan without exposure to ultraviolet rays. kaliostro/iStockphoto A new compound promises to give human skin a suntan without the sun. The compound hasn’t yet been tested in clinical trials—just in mice and on patches of human skin leftover from surgeries. But doctors are hopeful it could one day combat skin cancer by keeping people away from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.“Assuming there are no safety concerns, it is clearly a better option than UV exposure,” says Jerod Stapleton, a behavioral scientist at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey in New Brunswick who studies indoor tanning and was not involved in the work. “We are talking about millions of young people potentially not using tanning beds each year. … It could be a game-changer for skin cancer prevention.”The advance has its origins in a strain of “redhead” mice with rust-colored fur. The rodents harbor a variant of a gene called MC1R that gives rise to red hair and fair skin in humans. A properly functioning MC1R gene encodes a receptor that sits on the surface of skin cells called melanocytes, which transmit a signal to crank out dark melanin pigments; these pigments help protect skin cells from UV radiation. The redhead version of the receptor doesn’t respond to the make-more-melanin signal, which explains why redheaded humans tend to burn, not tan.Sign up for our daily newsletterGet more great content like this delivered right to you!Country *AfghanistanAland IslandsAlbaniaAlgeriaAndorraAngolaAnguillaAntarcticaAntigua and BarbudaArgentinaArmeniaArubaAustraliaAustriaAzerbaijanBahamasBahrainBangladeshBarbadosBelarusBelgiumBelizeBeninBermudaBhutanBolivia, Plurinational State ofBonaire, Sint Eustatius and SabaBosnia and HerzegovinaBotswanaBouvet IslandBrazilBritish Indian Ocean TerritoryBrunei DarussalamBulgariaBurkina FasoBurundiCambodiaCameroonCanadaCape VerdeCayman IslandsCentral African RepublicChadChileChinaChristmas IslandCocos (Keeling) IslandsColombiaComorosCongoCongo, The Democratic Republic of theCook IslandsCosta RicaCote D’IvoireCroatiaCubaCuraçaoCyprusCzech RepublicDenmarkDjiboutiDominicaDominican RepublicEcuadorEgyptEl SalvadorEquatorial GuineaEritreaEstoniaEthiopiaFalkland Islands (Malvinas)Faroe IslandsFijiFinlandFranceFrench GuianaFrench PolynesiaFrench Southern TerritoriesGabonGambiaGeorgiaGermanyGhanaGibraltarGreeceGreenlandGrenadaGuadeloupeGuatemalaGuernseyGuineaGuinea-BissauGuyanaHaitiHeard Island and Mcdonald IslandsHoly See (Vatican City State)HondurasHong KongHungaryIcelandIndiaIndonesiaIran, Islamic Republic ofIraqIrelandIsle of ManIsraelItalyJamaicaJapanJerseyJordanKazakhstanKenyaKiribatiKorea, Democratic People’s Republic ofKorea, Republic ofKuwaitKyrgyzstanLao People’s Democratic RepublicLatviaLebanonLesothoLiberiaLibyan Arab JamahiriyaLiechtensteinLithuaniaLuxembourgMacaoMacedonia, The Former Yugoslav Republic ofMadagascarMalawiMalaysiaMaldivesMaliMaltaMartiniqueMauritaniaMauritiusMayotteMexicoMoldova, Republic ofMonacoMongoliaMontenegroMontserratMoroccoMozambiqueMyanmarNamibiaNauruNepalNetherlandsNew CaledoniaNew ZealandNicaraguaNigerNigeriaNiueNorfolk IslandNorwayOmanPakistanPalestinianPanamaPapua New GuineaParaguayPeruPhilippinesPitcairnPolandPortugalQatarReunionRomaniaRussian FederationRWANDASaint Barthélemy Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da CunhaSaint Kitts and NevisSaint LuciaSaint Martin (French part)Saint Pierre and MiquelonSaint Vincent and the GrenadinesSamoaSan MarinoSao Tome and PrincipeSaudi ArabiaSenegalSerbiaSeychellesSierra LeoneSingaporeSint Maarten (Dutch part)SlovakiaSloveniaSolomon IslandsSomaliaSouth AfricaSouth Georgia and the South Sandwich IslandsSouth SudanSpainSri LankaSudanSurinameSvalbard and Jan MayenSwazilandSwedenSwitzerlandSyrian Arab RepublicTaiwanTajikistanTanzania, United Republic ofThailandTimor-LesteTogoTokelauTongaTrinidad and TobagoTunisiaTurkeyTurkmenistanTurks and Caicos IslandsTuvaluUgandaUkraineUnited Arab EmiratesUnited KingdomUnited StatesUruguayUzbekistanVanuatuVenezuela, Bolivarian Republic ofVietnamVirgin Islands, BritishWallis and FutunaWestern SaharaYemenZambiaZimbabweI also wish to receive emails from AAAS/Science and Science advertisers, including information on products, services and special offers which may include but are not limited to news, careers information & upcoming events.Required fields are included by an asterisk(*)David Fisher, a dermatologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, reasoned that he could help people tan by finding a way to stimulate this melaninmaking pathway. He and chemist Nathanael Gray of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston targeted a protein called salt-inducible kinase (SIK), which works like a master off switch in the melanin factory. They bought a molecule known to inhibit SIK from a chemical supplier, and applied the compound as a liquid to the shaven backs of the redhead mice. After 7 days of daily treatment, the mouse skin turned “almost jet black,” Fishers says. The tan was reversible though, and the rodents’ skin tone returned mostly back to normal in about 2 weeks. Fisher notes that were no apparent safety concerns, but this would need to be tested more rigorously before human application.Next, Fisher and Gray made several new versions of the compound with different chemical modifications to help it penetrate human skin, and tested it on patches of skin discarded from surgical procedures. One of their compounds made a brown splotch, indicating that it was able to reach the melanocytes in the skin and spur melanin production, the team reports today in Cell Reports.Under the microscope, the tan produced by the compound looks just like a natural tan, Fisher says, unlike spray tans and other sunless tanning products, which rely on dyes to stain dead skin cells and provide no UV protection. Melanin is known to provide some UV protection, although the team didn’t test this on the redhead mice in this study. If the compound proves safe for human use, it would provide tanners an alternative to the illicitly used synthetic hormone called melanotan, which has been associated with skin cancer.Fisher emphasizes that the new compound would not replace sunscreen, but instead be used alongside it. Because the compound simply ramps up melanin production, it should work on all skin types, but could prove most helpful for fair-skinned people at greatest risk for developing skin cancer, he says. Fisher is now looking for collaborators to test the compound in a clinical setting.Still, even if the new compound hits store shelves, experts urge caution. “I worry these molecules could give people a false sense of security,” says Jennifer Herrmann, a dermatologic surgeon at Moy-Fincher-Chipps Facial Plastics & Dermatology in Beverly Hills, California, who has studied the use of tanning accelerator products. “If you are just slightly darker, you may not give yourself a huge amount of protection,” she says, noting that a tan provides less shielding from the sun’s UV rays than a low-SPF sunscreen.last_img read more
