first_img Share Share 49 Views   3 comments Share Sharing is caring!center_img LocalNews Man headed to Dominica arrested on gun charges in Barbados by: – December 19, 2012 Tweet A man who was headed to Dominica was arrested at the Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados Sunday (Dec. 16) with a firearm and fifty-nine (59) rounds of ammunition concealed in his luggage.Thirty-five year old Malachi Maliki Haile Mugabe, whose nationality has not yet been confirmed, was accosted with a St. Kitts passport.He arrived in Barbados by air from Trinidad at about 11:20 am on Sunday.When his luggage was scanned by Customs Officials the contraband was discovered in a concealed compartment at the bottom of his luggage and he was handed over to the police.Mugabe has been charged with: Illegal Possession of a firearm; Illegal Possession with 59 rounds of ammunition; Importation of a firearm without a valid license; and Importation of ammunition without a valid license.He appeared at the District B Magistrate Court on Monday (Dec, 17), and was remanded until January 14, 2013.“At the time that he was arrested he was the holder of a St. Kitts-Nevis passport. It lists his occupation as seaman and it would appear he travels quite frequently,” PRO of the Royal Barbados Police Force inspector David Welch told St. Kitts & Nevis Observer.According to The Observer the Mr. Welch also revealed that Mugabe had St. Kitts -Nevis listed as his place of birth and nationality on the passport, hence St. Kitts police officials were informed by Barbados.“It is procedure that we alert the police in the country where the person resides to ascertain their true identity, if the person is wanted or if indeed they are a national of that country,” Mr. Welch said further.He assured that the Barbados police was doing “follow-up investigation” into the matter.Public relations officer of the Dominica Police Force, inspector John Carbon told Dominica Vibes News that they are aware of the incident and are seeking further information regarding the person of interest.Mugabe was scheduled to arrive in Dominica on Sunday and leave at the weekend.
