PBCJ Important to Media Landscape – Vaz

Daryl Vaz, has said that the Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica (PBCJ) represents an important space in the media landscape in the island.Making his contribution to the 2010/11 Sectoral Debate today (July 27) in the House of Representatives, the Minister informed that the government is totally committed to supporting and strengthening the entity. He said that the PBCJ has successfully engaged the Jamaican society on a wide range of issues, through discussion and interview programmes, cultural and educational segments, documentaries, and coverage of Parliamentary proceedings.According to Minister Vaz, the mandate of the PBCJ should not be confused with that of the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), as while the JIS “is the information arm of the government, disseminating information on government programmes and policies, the PBCJ’s task is wider.“Government information should not be conflated with public information. It is not one and the same. (The PBCJ programme) ‘Gordon House Inside Out,’ for example, gives equal time to members from both sides of this House and space for a panel of commentators with contending views,” he noted. In the meantime, he informed that last year, the government acquired Kool FM to facilitate the commencement of public radio broadcasting, which will be rolled out to complement the news and current affairs offering provided through the public/private partnership between the Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica and Nationwide News Network.center_img RelatedPBCJ Important to Media Landscape – Vaz RelatedArchives Critical to Jamaica’s Historylast_img read more
